Astrometric Solar-System Anomalies

چکیده

There are at least four unexplained anomalies connected with astrometric data. Perhaps the most disturbing is the fact that when a spacecraft on a flyby trajectory approaches the Earth within 2000 km or less, it often experiences a change in total orbital energy per unit mass. Next, a secular change in the astronomical unit AU is definitely a concern. It is increasing by about 15 cm yr−1. The other two anomalies are perhaps less disturbing because of known sources of nongravitational acceleration. The first is an apparent slowing of the two Pioneer spacecraft as they exit the solar system in opposite directions. Some astronomers and physicists are convinced this effect is of concern, but many others are convinced it is produced by a nearly identical thermal emission from both spacecraft, in a direction away from the Sun, thereby producing acceleration toward the Sun. The fourth anomaly is a measured increase in the eccentricity of the Moon’s orbit. Here again, an increase is expected from tidal friction in both the Earth and Moon. However, there is a reported unexplained increase that is significant at the three-sigma level. It is prudent to suspect that all four anomalies have mundane explanations, or that one or more anomalies are a result of systematic error. Yet they might eventually be explained by new physics. For example, a slightly modified theory of gravitation is not ruled out, perhaps analogous to Einstein’s 1916 explanation for the excess precession of Mercury’s

Some aspects of Relativistic Astrometry from within the Solar System

In this article we outline the structure of a general relativistic astrometric model which has been developed to deduce the position and proper motion of stars from 1-microarcsecond optical observations made by an astrometric satellite orbiting around the Sun. The basic assumption of our model is that the Solar System is the only source of gravity, hence we show how we modeled the satellite obs...

Laser Astrometric Test of Relativity: Science, Technology, and Mission Design

The Laser Astrometric Test of Relativity (LATOR) experiment is designed to explore general theory of relativity in the close proximity to the Sun – the most intense gravitational environment in the solar system. Using independent time-series of highly accurate measurements of the Shapiro time-delay (interplanetary laser ranging accurate to 3 mm at ∼2AU) and interferometric astrometry (accurate ...

Astrometric Microlensing Constraints on a Massive Body in the Outer Solar System with the Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics (GAIA)

A body in Solar orbit beyond the Kuiper belt exhibits an annual parallax that exceeds its apparent proper motion by up to many orders of magnitude. Apparent motion of this body along the parallactic ellipse will deflect the angular position of background stars due to astrometric microlensing (“induced parallax”). By synoptically sampling the astrometric position of background stars over the ent...

Space-borne global astrometric surveys: the hunt for extra-solar planets

The proposed global astrometry mission GAIA, recently recommended within the context of ESA’s Horizon 2000 Plus long-term scientific program, appears capable of surveying the solar neighborhood within ∼ 200 pc for the astrometric signatures of planets around stars down to the magnitude limit of V =17 mag, which includes late M dwarfs at 100 pc. Realistic end-to-end simulations of the GAIA globa...

In paper 167 of his serie published in The Observatory, Griffin presented the spectroscopic orbit of HD 112914, a late main sequence star. He also noticed that this star, also known as HIP 63406, was one of the few for which the DMSA/O Annex of the Hipparcos Catalogue derived an orbit prior to any spectroscopic one. Albeit in agreement with each others, the astrometric orbit was however determi...
